The importance of space
For the last week working on my own has been great. I have taken into consideration everything I can think of to the world, people, objects and things. I am exploring everything and having so much fun with this project, each day I think of something new and random. I just never knew there was so much meaning to the word space and never really thought about the word SPACE. I mean it is all around us and it is interesting to see what people think of space themselves. I see space as something wonderful and dangerous at the same time. In terms of everything really, if you give a person to much space they become lonely, depressed, agraphobic, paranoid and suicidal. If you don't have the exact measurements for certain objects like houses, rooms, presses, buildings and roads, it could be a disaster. If we don't look after things and check up on things as often as we should then things we like could rot or grow fungus on them. If something is in the wrong space, or the space does not do it justice? The space in your head, your personal space is it a good space? Do you feel comfortable in your own skin? There is loads of questions to be asked in terms of space. I never knew how important this word was until now. It is great to be able to explore it and have fun with the word SPACE.
Arnulf Rainer figure and colour
Arnulf Rainer starts to introduce figure and colour to his work which is nice to see, but still the black is the dominant colour. His pictures are dark and dreary but have something different and haunting at the same time. In some of the figures he paints, the faces are distorted with colour and the pieces of the face are not where they are supposed to be. He has taken things out of context and shown us that the pieces do not fit but so what? He has taken normal features out of their space and put them in a new one. I sense from his pictures with a colour mark or distortion to the faces of his portraits that he is invading their space.
I go back to BLACK ...

This is black how we imagine or see it, but there is some other interesting textures of black we don't see. Here are a few forms of black I have found over the last week of college, that have caught my eye. Even though black is the underlining colour, there is still something quiet special about this colour and the effect it has on us.

Beams of light
After looking at space as a whole and its blackness, and how we are tiny dots in this world. I started looking at shapes and the space between them. In the darkness we always try to find the light, although I think of being empty and black, I do like to think there is something more out there. Rachel Whiteread started to come into my mind, she takes basic shapes and images and creates a unique space between them.
In this picture here we see a dark room and beams of light which she introduced into the picture. It enlightens me to think there is a light at the end of the tunnel and maybe we are not just nothing, maybe we are something? The spaces between the circles are just perfect and beautiful, and it shows us how light really transforms a picture. Playing on the word space again, these circles are in a very odd space. But maybe that is the beauty of the image, and it works for me.

Richard Serra

Richard Serra - 2009 -
This picture of a black circle makes me think of space outside our world. It makes me feel like nothing, and that there is nothing but blackness after the light goes out. In terms of space as a whole it makes me feel quiet empty and small. There is bigger things out there beyond me, you and the now.

Space???

Looking up research for are new project brief '' to sense my own space '' I am starting off thinking of everything and not one set thing. Space varies from one thing to the next and it depends in which context you are refering it to. To start the ball rolling I am starting with a picture of space, probably what everybody else has thought of aswell. But when I see this picture the term space does not come to mind, it is the word NOTHING! It is scary to think of outer space and the earth, because we are just a dot. :/ There is things out there that are undiscovered maybe that is the scary part, not space but not knowing. Too much space can make you feel very small when you have a lot of it and make you feel like nothing.

My first week at Limerick College of Art and Design
Hello everyone,
My name is Miriam Carroll and welcome to my blog! I have just started in Limerick College of Art and Design and I am coming to the end of my first week. I have to admit the first day I was sitting there I felt like leaving, they threw so much information at us, I did not know what to do. Questions started coming into my head like maybe I cant do this? But I took a deep breath and put myself in the shoes of my lecturers, time is not on there side as they have to talk to other years as well. I felt a little bit easier the second day, we went through the brief and some lecturers showed us work of famous artists. This got the ball rolling for me, all of a sudden I had ideas coming from me at all angles. The third day we had more talks from the lecturers which had some really inspirational words to share with us, I found myself really relaxed and calm about the topic that was chosen for our brief. Inspirational words were shared by Lecturer Des MacMahon '' Just think of a shitty idea and make work on it '' this made me laugh, feel more at ease and comfortable that I can attack this brief with motivation, originality and passion. Another term introduced to us was '' the butterfly approach '' by lecturer Kieran Whitelaw (I think that is his name, he may have a beard now). He suggested to us that the butterfly approach was the easy option, a butterfly gets bored takes off and goes in the other direction. It actually never makes any progress and ends up at the beginning, so be brave and go into the darkness and find away for yourself. I find the words of these lecturers very inspirational and I feel they know what they are talking about and enjoy listening to them. I have met some lovely people the first week and have felt a warm, friendly and helpful atmosphere in the college. I am happy with my studio space, I have a big window which is perfect for natural light and half a wall :D. The brief title '' to sense my space '' is a brilliant title for the brief, and I feel it is something I can relate to very much so. I have tonnes of ideas my mind is like a running tap, it never stops! I fear the day I get a block and cant think of anything. It allows us to widen are research enormously, its GREAT !!!!!!!!!!! The video clip '' the power of ten '' opened up my mind more, I was thinking on the same level but it was good to watch to get more ideas. What an amazing insight into the world, to us as people and to have that understanding of it all. At the moment I am sensing that I am happy, warm and comfortable with my space. I feel Limerick College of Art and Design might just be the place for me. :D
