The story of shadows

Working with wood

Shane Holland

Great to be back after the summer and to be in the sculpture department. I am currently working on my summer brief were we had to pick a piece from the hunt museum project and expand are research on it. I have took a few ideas and went off on tangents. I have explored the piece about my brush chair from the hunt project and have been researching about furniture design.

I find it to be interesting and challenging, I am looking at sculptural forms in everyday design. Over the summer I visited Shane Hollands design studio and looked at his work. I was intrigued about how he was challenging his sculptural forms into functional pieces.

The Brush Chair

Final image of my chair design - Year 1 - SCM

This design was got to do with the brief for the Hunt Museum and was inspired by the H comb. The chair resembles characteristics of the comb making an original new design. It took ages to get it to come together and it was not complete until the morning of the exam. I kept pushing and pushing the technical staff to the point were I was angry and exhausted. I was not happy with the wood that was used and the way it was cut. But it was able to illustrate the idea in 3D suppose to 2D. I would be happy in the future making these things myself. Other people liked it but I found faults with my design and maybe I should of pushed the staff harder but it is a good example for first year.
